Electrician courses

The most common pathway to becoming an electrician is through a 4 year apprenticeship at TAFE coupled with work placement under a qualified electrician. There are a few different electrician courses however and we’ll look at some of them here:

Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician

This qualification gives you the competencies to select, install, test and troubleshoot electrical systems in commercial and residential premises. It includes material needed to qualify for an electrician’s licence.

Certificate III in Engineering - Electrical/Electronic Trade

Apprentice electricians can undertake this course where they’ll be skilled up to work in the manufacturing and engineering fields. Students also learn OH&S, policies and procedures, and planning skills.

Certificate III in Renewable Energy ELV

This is one of the newer electrician courses in that you’ll learn how to select, install, test, troubleshoot and repair renewable energy systems. However, it is important to note this course does not include competencies for obtaining an electrician’s licence.

Certificate IV in Electrotechnology - Systems Electrician

This course is for qualified electricians who hold a Cert III level qualification. The key areas you’ll learn are installing and maintain electrical components, wiring, and systems. You’ll be able to specialise in one of the following: control, hazard, energy supply, installation and servicing.

If you’re unsure which qualification you’ll want to pursue, often electricians who have taken on apprentices are a great sounding board. They will have an idea which particular electrician courses you’ll need as part of an apprenticeship.
